Climb the 284 steps to the top of the Arc and look straight down the Champs Elysées to the Place de la Concorde, the site of the guillotine in the French Revolution now dominated by 23m pink granite obelisk given to France by the Egyptians in 1805. if you want to shop during your visit to the capital. Stroll to the wonderful department stores of Galeries Lafayette and Le Printemps and buy any fashion or beauty item you could want whilst admiring the historic architecture. At the other end of the scale you could barter your way to a bargain at the Marche de Monteuil, one of Paris' famous flea markets.
