The 1st arrondissement is located mostly on the Right Bank and also covers the west end of the Ile de la Cité. It is one of the oldest in Paris; the Ile de la Cité formerly being the heart of the Roman city of Lutetia, conquered in 52 BC, while some parts on the right bank, Les Halles included, date back to the early Middle Ages. A significant part of the arrondissement harbours the Louvre and the Tuileries Gardens.
